Then Averyn tells the true story of investigative journalist, Nellie Bly. In order to secure a position as a reporter at New York World, Nellie agreed to go undercover at the insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island to report the goings on behind closed doors. After successfully convincing a judge and two doctors that she should be committed, Nellie spent ten days living on Blackwell’s Island where she witnessed the horrific and inhumane treatment of the patients residing there.
