Marilyn Brighteyes was born carrying the burden of intergenerational trauma that is the consequence of centuries of colonization in Canada; in particular, the impact that residential schools had on aboriginal families. She grew up surrounded by abuse, drugs, and alcohol, but that part of her story is nothing new. What sets her apart, as an individual, is that she has chosen to rise above the

trauma. Her mantra is, “It is what it is until it isn’t."
