You’re at work. Your phone buzzes and the display flashes on. It’s a text from your significant other. Using strategic angles to hide your dirty-doings on company time, you text with your S.O. As you do this you are struck by something “off” in their replies —more emojis: winky faces, smoochy faces, heart eyes, the frequency and volume to which these sigils propagate before your very eyes alarms you. Your partner is hinting at something, but what? Birthday? —No. Date-night? —No. Horny? —maybe...but no. Anniversary? —Fuck...Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck you’re screwed. It’s over, done. Payday isn’t for another week and you’ve spent your last dime on the membership renewal of your ‘Webmaster Tools CC’ subscription. Fuck. With one breath in and one breath out, you mount the bucking mechanical bull that is your roiling insides.You tell yourself to keep calm and “handle it”, so you text your S.O that your supervisor is nearby and you’ll see them tonight —winky face. You then take your phone off of wifi (you’ve been burned before) and run a Google search for “anniversary gifts by the year”, you tap on the first result and the page loads. Things such as, “The Stone Anniversary, The Paper Anniversary, The Wood Anniversary, etc ” fall in and out of your focus as you scan through the list to find your year. In no time your quarry falls under your finger. You absentmindedly tap on the text, highlighting and unhilighting it as you lose yourself in relief. You let out a slight laugh, for fortune has looked kindly on you today. You lift your finger to reveal that your year is the, “The Podcasting Anniversary”, and with a conscience as light as a feather, you print out the podcast link of today’s episode of JackamFM and print it out—show notes and all— and place it in a supermarket-bought anniversary card. On your way home you stop to pick up some chocolates, and surprise your lover with the bounty. Your partner is ecstatic, and after the two of you listen to the whole episode together, you get down to having some: uncouth, stinky, sweaty, nasty, yucky, down-right-rude, sex. And all is well.
