New $15 million program to tackle fatty liver epidemic

Listen Later

Fatty liver disease affects one in three Australian adults and is the nation's most common liver condition, yet currently has no specific medical treatment beyond diet and exercise. The Westmead Institute of Medical Research has launched a $15 million seven-year research program to understand the disease at a molecular level, develop biological markers for early detection through blood tests, and create effective medical treatments. The condition, caused by excess fat buildup in the liver from food and alcohol, can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer, and increased risk of heart and kidney disease.
