If you feel like your desperate pleas for your kids to take some more responsibility for household chores are falling on deaf ears, fear not! Help is at hand with the new Hire and Fire your Kids app.
Now you can introduce game-playing elements to encourage your children to engage with chores and earn rewards for positive behavior. The HFK app aims to reduce family friction with a system based on behavioral science and the core concepts of Recognition, Reward, and Consequence.
The gaming component of the app revolves around a hiring and firing system. You post jobs that your children apply for. Once 'hired', they can earn rewards if tasks are completed. Children can get 'fired' if they repeatedly fail to follow 'house rules' set by the whole family - at which point they have to face their agreed forfeit or consequence. They receive a warning X each time they break the rules - and you can get warnings too, ensuring everyone is involved in the game.
A spokesperson explains, “The object of the game is for the kids to finish each pay period without getting fired so they can keep their incentive bonuses and prevent their selected consequence from being activated.”
According to the HFK website, 42% of children own a smartphone by the time they are ten years old. By age fourteen, this percentage is as high as 92%. The app is designed to help you turn the screen time habits of your children into something constructive and embrace the realities of parenting in the digital era.
HFK aims to address some of the common frustrations that you probably experience every day such as having to nag your children to help out at home – leading to frustration, frayed tempers, and your precious family time becoming something of a battleground.
The app helps clarify what you expect of your children and provides a clear, and fun, system to make these goals achievable. All game rules, rewards, and consequences are customizable to meet the unique quirks and needs of your family.
The HFK team believes that the principles behind the app will help your children develop a stronger sense of responsibility that they can carry into adulthood.
Janet Arnold – a Behavior Consultant and Positive Parenting Practitioner- says "It’s more than just doing their chores; it's about supporting our children to build independence in many different areas and to become self-reliant individuals who can become productive members in their communities."
You can download the app from the App Store, Google Play, and other popular app outlets.
