Sermon Notes—“New Heavens and a New Earth"
“We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text

8But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:8–13 (NASB95)

Three words to guide today’s message: SAVED, SUFFERING, SANCTIFIED.

Day of the Lord: dramatic and extraordinary interventions of God in human history for the judgment of sin.

Because they’re saved, Christians have no reason to FEAR the day of the Lord.

Jesus ABSORBED all the PENALTY for our sins.
Don’t live in SHAME, GUILT or FEAR! Jesus paid it ALL!!

8He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns.

1 Corinthians 1:8 (NLT)

God has delayed the Day of the Lord because He wants everyone to repent and be saved.

SUFFERING SKEWS our perception of time, making us feel we’ve suffered longer than we actually have.
God views time from an eternal perspective, nevertheless every day has PURPOSE and is ADVANCING His plan.
Whatever season you’re in (good or bad), there’s a PURPOSE for it and it’s TEMPORARY.

23“Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign Lord. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.

Ezekiel 18:23 (NLT)

17For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:17–18 (ESV)

If we know that the Day of the Lord is coming and will pave the way for a new heaven and a new earth, shouldn’t that shape how we live today?

Living a sanctified life COMMITTED to God’s purpose is the only logical response.
