The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will be issuing new Medicare cards in the coming weeks and months in an effort to combat identity theft. The new cards will use a randomly assigned number called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier to replace the Social Security-based numbers currently on cards.
