Seen Them Given

New season, new laws, new refs

Listen Later

It's the last minute of a hotly contested local derby, and with the scores at 1-1 the home side win a stoppage time penalty. The home team's striker, who was booked earlier in the match, cooly slots in what must surely be the winner and celebrates by removing his shirt and giving it to a young fan in the stands. The away team's captain argues that this should be the home striker's second booking, but as you consider the situation you notice the striker is wearing an identical second shirt beneath the one he gave away. What do you do?

Welcome to Seen Them Given where we focus on the laws of the game and those who enforce them.

Mike McCarthy is joined by former FIFA referee and the former boss of the PGMOL Keith Hackett to debate the big issues of the week.

This week:

  • How to spot a referee who isn't keeping up with play
  • Why the handball law should be better this season
  • The new Premier League referee Keith backs to become one of the best
  • And what's in a referees assessment?

Got a question for Keith? Want to pose a teaser for the show? Have an idea for a new law to improve the game?
