New Word Monday: Hush-hush

Listen Later

Today Teresa talks about the expression hush-hush. This idiom is of the straight-up repeated type. I love this expression. It means confidential, very secret. It's useful to know that the word hush by itself means be quiet, so when you say be quiet twice it has this meaning of secret or confidential. So let's look at a couple of examples. The first one is "My wife works for the government and her work is very hush-hush. Even I don't know what she actually does." In this case the work is secret and can't be revealed even to a spouse. This could be because the work is dangerous or would give one country or business an advantage over others.
