A new variant of the Omicron strain of Covid-19, known as XEC, is spreading rapidly in Europe and is likely to become the dominant strain. First detected in Germany, the variant is already present in 13 countries, including the UK. XEC is a hybrid of previous Omicron subvariants, and while its symptoms are similar to earlier variants, its highly transmissible nature has led to concerns about its potential impact. Scientists believe existing vaccines should protect against severe illness and recommend maintaining good hygiene practices.
