New Year, Real Repentance (Matthew 3:1-12)
A new year is upon us and it’s common to make new year’s resolutions. To resolve how we’re going to do things differently in 2024. But usually, it’s a just a bit of light-hearted fun, because we don’t really expect that things are going to change. It’s easy to think that way about the Christian life too. To have good intentions but to see no real change. But God’s word challenges us. In view of Jesus arrival and the day of God’s wrath, real repentance and radical change is not optional. It is essential.
This sermon was preached at Cross & Crown, Penang on 7th January 2024.
Introduction: Real Change in 2024?
Context
1. Repentance is essential because God’s kingdom is near (1–6)
a. The Kingdom of Heaven (1–2)
b. The Promised Messenger (3)
c. The Promised Elijah (4)
d. The Sign of Repentance (5-6)
2. Repentance is urgent because God’s judgment is coming (7–10)
a. Real Repentance Bears Fruit (7–8)
b. Real Repentance does not presume (9–10)
3. Repentance is possible because God’s spirit (11–12)
a. The Greater One (11)
b. The Greater Baptism (11)
c. The Greater Judgement (12)
Conclusion: Beginning the Year with Repentance
a. Will you repent?
b. Will you preach repentance?
