New Year’s Message 2022:
Facing Your Fears
Rev. Ho-Ming Tsui
Scripture: Psalm 27:1-10
———
1. Face your fear(V. 1-3)
What is your fear?
a. Surface (external) fears
b. Source (internal) fears
Source fear: Power
• My life only has meaning if I am successful
• My biggest fear: Humiliation
• Emotionally, I can come across as Angry
Source fear: Approval
• My life only has meaning if I am affirmed
• My biggest fear:Rejection
• Emotionally, I can come across as Cowardly
Source fear: Comfort
• My life only has meaning if I am free to enjoy
• My biggest fear: Stress
• Emotionally, I can come across as Apathetic or lazy
Source fear: Control
• My life only has meaning if I can influence outcomes
• My biggest fear: Uncertainty
• Emotionally, I can come across as Worried
———
2. Seek the right one thing (v.4-6)
If what I am seeking cannot be take away then my fear will evaporate (also see v. 10)
What’s the solution? It’s to reorder our affections so that we look for ultimate meaning in the only place where it can be found: in God himself. It’s only when God becomes our first love that we can love other things property, putting them in their rightful place, as opposed to what we want to make them. In other words, our love for God will prevent us from being consumed by less important things.
—Darryl Dash
Many people have a wrong idea of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.
—Helen Keller
There is greater rest and solace to be found in the presence of God for one hour than in an eternity of the presence of man.
—Robert Murray M’Cheyne
———
Conclusion: Keep and Wait (v. 7-10)
Our situation may not change, but when we seek after God, we change.
