A dentist I spoke with last week is paying $4,500/month for “coaching.”
- No assigned coach.
- No one looking at his metrics.
- No clear plan.
- Locked into a contract.
Practice bank account: almost empty.
Personal bank account: almost empty.
I’m a HUGE fan of coaching. I’ve paid six figures+ into it over the years and gotten insane ROI from some programs… and almost nothing from others.
The problem isn’t “coaching is bad.”
The problem is dentists don’t know how to shop for coaching.
This video is a framework for choosing the right coach/mastermind for your dental practice—and avoiding expensive disappointments.
I’m Dr. Richard Low:
- Dentist & former CEO of 35 dental practices
- Founder of the #1 rated practice‑ownership podcast in dentistry
- Burned out, rebuilt my life around faith, family, and fitness
- Now coaching 50+ male practice‑owner dentists inside Next Level Fathers to lose weight, reconnect with God, and lead better at home
In this video, you’ll learn:
1. Start with your bottleneck, not their brochure
Before you swipe your card, ask:
- Where am I now?
- Where do I actually want to go?
Work less?
Add docs and scale?
Drop PPOs and increase profit?
Make the office less chaotic and more systematized?
- What is the one thing blocking me next?
If you don’t know your bottleneck, you’ll buy generic coaching and hope they magically diagnose it for you. Sometimes they can, often they can’t.
- Use the shopping process itself as free coaching:
Talk to 2–3 coaches.
See if they can accurately tell you what your real constraint is after hearing your numbers and goals.
- If they can’t even do that on a sales call, they’re not going to do it once you’re paying them.
2. Understand the four levels of coaching
Most “dental coaches” are actually very different creatures. Roughly:
- Mindset / leadership / personal growth
Life‑coach meets leadership.
Helps you deal with fear, identity, communication, conflict.
- CEO / strategic advisor
Looks at your P&L, KPIs, capacity, capital deployment.
Helps you decide:
When to hire
When to add ops
How much to spend on marketing
Where to invest vs cut
- Management / team / systems coach
Works with your office manager, leads, and team.
Builds SOPs, huddles, accountability, training.
- Specialized implementation / trainers
Phone skills, case acceptance, insurance / AR, scheduling, etc.
Deep in one area; may not look at the big picture.
You need to know: which level do I actually need right now?
3. Key questions to ask any prospective coach
Use these on your discovery call:
- Is it 1:1 or group (or both)?
Where is the real value? Live calls? Courses? In‑office?
- Do you work with just me, or also with my team?
Do you help me implement, or just tell me what to do?
- Do you regularly review my numbers?
Are we looking at KPIs together, or just talking feelings and ideas?
- What type of issues are you BEST at solving?
Culture? Profit? Growth? Insurance? Stress?
- Tell me about 2–3 clients who were in a situation like mine.
Where were they? What did you do? Where are they now?
“Can I talk to one of them?”
- How do you deliver?
In‑person vs remote
Call frequency
Slack / text / email access between calls
- What’s the agreement?
Length, cancellation, guarantee, “trial” period.
If they can’t answer these clearly, that’s your answer.
4. How to get value even if you don’t hire them
Even a few consult calls can:
Clarify your goals
Reveal blind spots in your numbers
Show patterns (if 3 different coaches all say, “Your real problem is X,” pay attention)
Go into every conversation trying to be the best transformation that program has ever seen, even if you never join.
5. A few people I actually trust (no kickbacks)
Not sponsored, no referral fees, just people I’ve seen get real results for real docs:
- Paul Etchison – culture, vision, and getting your team to care deeply.
- Kiera Dent / Dental A‑Team – systems, team training, case acceptance, accountability.
- The Lifestyle Practice (Derek, Matt, etc.) – becoming a true owner, lifestyle + profit.
- Shared Practices Coaching (my old company; I’m no longer involved) – multi‑doc growth, metrics, owner + OM coaching.
These are just examples. The point is: find people whose content and clients ring true for the problem you actually have.
