11.06.2016 - By Matthew Tommasi: Ultramarathon Runner, Spiritual, Endurance
Nickademus Hollon is one of a handful of people who have ever completed the mythical Barkley Marathons - a race where it is common for there to be zero finishers.
In 2013, Nick finished in 57h 39m 24s.
The Barkley Marathons has been designed specifically for people to fail.
There is 60,000 feet of elevation change (equivalent to ascending / descending Mt Everest twice), a 60 hour cut-off, there is no up-to-date website and application process is shrouded in mystery.
The entry fee for first time entrants is $1.60 and you need to bring a car license plate from your home state.
If you are one of the lucky 40 people to be accepted each year, you are given a letter of condolence.
Nick shares some hellish insight into the race that eats its young.
