blocks calcium transport resulting in inhibition of contraction causing systemic vasodilatation

Nursing Considerations

• use caution in heart block, decreased blood pressure • don't consume grapefruit juice while taking medication • may cause arrhythmias • may cause elevated liver function tests • may cause gingival hyperplasia, Steven's Johnson syndrome • monitor blood pressure and pulse • monitor calcium levels • instruct patient on taking heart rate and blood pressure
