Set in March 1883, the story follows Judge Mathew Deacon, who travels from Pennsylvania to Cambridge, England, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his son, Robert. Upon arrival, Deacon learns from the Provost of King's College that Robert has allegedly committed suicide. However, Robert's friend, Griffin, insists that Robert would never take his own life.
