- Chapter 3: Sicca | The Jackal of Carthage (Season 1, Episode 13) | Historical Harem Fantasy
The city has moved its army a hundred miles inland, to a town where an army can be forgotten. Winter is coming. The pay is not. Under a fine awning, a kindly old man with linen-wrapped hands explains the arithmetic of a discount to a mercenary captain who counts better than he does...warmly, correctly, smiling the whole time.

Behind a door with a moon-lamp burning lives a house where that does not happen...not because the women are nice, but because they have rules.
Tonight: the six laws of the Hold, which is what the camp calls the Household once it has watched it hold. The cloak that was halved instead of fought over. The fifth kept, and why the Hold has no common purse. The lamp, who lights it, and the night it was first lit against a wall. A promise made in the dark that had six owners by breakfast. The box nobody opens, and the night somebody did. The man who sits outside the door until dawn. And the one thing the six have in common, which is not him...

Fifty-three cards, and they call it the Hundred. Four suits that are the whole world in miniature: Moons for what is kept, Fires for what is spent, Coins for what is owed, Knives for who collects. And one law above the others: the last hand of the night is never played. It is read.
Tonight: the deck the ten thousand carried, the wild Jackal the table rules on after it lands, the table laws, how gambling became fortune-telling in one winter at Sicca, three worked readings, and why the Council banned the deck inside the walls and failed.

The richest city on earth has thrown a feast for the army it cannot pay. Gauls with lime in their hair, slingers dicing on the couches, wine that was never meant to leave the sanctuary. And a foundling captain named Kadmar, sitting where he can see every exit, with one rule he has never broken.

44 min - The City That Was Bought | The Founding Myth of Carthage | The Jackal of Carthage
Every city has a price. Most cities forget what they paid. Carthage wrote it down.
Tonight, the oldest entry in the oldest ledger in the world: a widow who fled her brother with sacks of sand and a fortune under the floorboards, a king who offered as much land as an ox-hide would cover, a trick the moon taught her at the salt-pools, a strip of hide that burned a silver ring into the hill, a pyre on the shore that burned white and split its smoke in two, and the last words that opened the account every book in The Carthage Cycle is still collecting. Why the citadel is called the Hide. Why the city shaves its coins and calls it heritage. Why an empty pyre burns at the harbor mouth every year. Why the two temples face each other. And why a foundling captain counting his army's wages is picking up the oldest debt there is.

23 min - The Fire and the Moon | Why the Gods of Carthage Can Never Make Peace
Why is the world cruel? Carthage does not answer with a fall or a mystery. It answers with an account: two gods running two incompatible businesses in one city, and mortals are the ledger they settle it in.
The deepest episode yet. Moloch, the fire that must consume to exist. Tanit, the moon that exists by never spending. Why their war cannot be reconciled...not a quarrel over the same thing, but a collision of opposite natures. How the fight is fought in the phases of the moon over your head. What it is to live as the coin two gods are trying to spend. And, at the end, the thing both priesthoods are paid to keep you from noticing about the moon that always, always comes back.

15 min - The Council of the Hundred | Why Carthage Fears a Paid Army | The Jackal of Carthage (Book #1)
What frightens the richest city on earth more than an unpaid army at its gates? A paid one.
Tonight: the Council of the Hundred...the hundred and four merchants who rule Carthage, how a seat is bought, what THE LEDGER BALANCES actually means behind a locked door, and the cold arithmetic that keeps ten thousand soldiers on a leash of owing. The kindly old man under the awning was not lying. That is the horror.

11 min - The Coin That Cannot Be Shaved | Why the Gods of Carthage Are at War | The Jackal of Carthage
Look up...the moon is full tonight, and in Carthage that is a victory lap in a war older than the world.
This is the city's oldest story, told the way its grandmothers tell it...door barred, voice low. How one first light became two gods: the share that burns, and the share that shines.
Why Moloch shaves every coin he touches and cannot help it.
How Tanit forged the one coin he can never make lighter...and hung it over the harbor where he has to look at it.
What the fourteen nights of the moon actually are. And why a city that shaved its own soldiers' pay didn't just cheat an army...it insulted the one being in creation who takes the shaving of a coin personally.
Two gods. Two answers to the only question there is: spend it, or keep it. The people of Carthage live in the crossfire...and so does everyone in the books.
