Publisher's Summary:
This is a fictional story based during the time of the Trail of Tears (1830s era).
Nitika is found as a baby on the brink of death by a traveling Cherokee tribe and taken in and raised by the chief and his wife, who recently lost a child of their own. Nitika is blessed as a baby by the medicine woman to have a destiny and far greater purpose than she could ever imagine.
As a young girl, Nitika starts to question why she is different from the rest of her tribe and seeks guidance from the medicine woman, who directs her to her mother, Adsila, to tell her the tale. When Nitika reaches adulthood, the US Army puts out a decree to wipe out all tribes, taking their land and selling those capable of work into slavery. Nitika's tribe is attacked and forced from their land while the men are out on a hunt.
As her world is torn apart, she learns to endure some of the most horrible experiences, which makes her stronger in the end. She is later sold into slavery, to a group of travelers who end up treating her more like a friend than a slave. Among their journeys she falls in love with one of her owners, ends up back with her tribe, and seeks revenge on the general who takes her mother as his own slave. By seeking to kill the general, she hopes to free her mother and end the war that has begun between the white men and her people.

Story of a white Cherokee girl
I bought NITIKA: TEARS OF MY PEOPLE because the subject matter was interesting to me. I love historical fiction, especially fiction about the history of various native cultures. The book lived up to my expectations.
A blonde, blue-eyed baby girl is adopted by the Cherokee and raised as one of their own. The Trail of Tears starts, and her tribe is driven from their home. The ensuing adventures are heart breaking. Nitika's father and her best friend are killed by the US soldiers. Her mother is kidnapped by them. She herself is sold into slavery. However, she has a special mission in saving her mother and her tribe from these horrific circumstances. Somewhere along the line Nitika falls in love with a white man. He quickly becomes a part of her tribe and they plan to marry.
The author has clearly done her research on that time period. The story is engaging and the characters are likable. There is no sex or language, but there is too much violence for my taste. The book gets repetitive in parts, but mostly the story moves right along. My one suggestion is that the author get some help in proofreading and editing her work. There are many usage errors that are hard to overlook. The over use of the passive voice is very disturbing. The author has a lot of potential in becoming an excellent writer. All in all, I enjoyed NITIKA tremendously and will be looking forward to reading more from this author.
Great read!
This is a great book that captivated my attention the whole time. I really liked the character development and also the historical accuracy. Can't wait for Book 2!
A breath of fresh air in the book world
A breath of fresh air in my list of books I've read. The first book in awhile that has held my attention and kept my eyes glued to the pages and eager to read more. Truly helps you envision every word you are reading and drags you into its pages. Loved many aspects of this book and was truly fond of the bond it showed between humans, nature and animal.
