The supernova SN1987A was discovered not by the James Webb Space Telescope, but rather by astronomers in the Southern Hemisphere on February 24, 1987. SN1987A was the brightest supernova observed since the invention of the telescope. It occurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. The James Webb Space Telescope, launched much later in December 2021, aims to observe celestial objects and phenomena in unprecedented detail but did not play a role in the discovery of SN1987A.
