“Child abuse thrives in the shadows of privacy and secrecy.  It lives by inattention.”  So said Dr. David Bakan, professor of psychology in his book “Slaughter of the Innocents.”  Melisha’s death at the hands of her stepfather brought such a bright spotlight to the dark nasty secret of child battering that immediate changes were made in the United States. Today we’ll review the good –changes in the policies and regulations followed by social services and welfare departments -- that led to greater protection of children who were in similar situations as little Missy was.
