It is dangerous to misinterpret God's law. We must conform our lives according to God's word. God's covenant people have a history of going astray. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is showing his people the way to live within his kingdom. Jesus is correcting the Pharasaic misunderstanding of God's law. Jesus demands our entire lives, not mere formal adherence to external religion.
