An uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been executed for trying to overthrow the government, the Korean central News Agency reported early Friday.

“Traitor Jang Song Taek Executed” blared the headline posted by the state-run news agency regarding the man who, until recently, had been considered as the nation’s second-most powerful figure.

북한 중앙통신은 지난 금요일 당과 국가의 권력을 장악하려는 음모 등 국가를 전복시키려 한 장성택에 “반역자 장성택 사형”이라는 제목으로 공개처형을 집행했다는 소식을 보도했습니다. 김정은의 고모부이자 북한 내 2인자인 장성택 전 국방위원회 부위원장은 체포된 지 4일 만에 특별군사재판 후 즉각 사형에 처했습니다.
