

North Koreans that escape and resettle in the South release a myriad of challenges, perhaps none more daunting than acclimating to a 21st century global economy. Connecting these people with the right mentors and resources is essential.

That's where today's guest Marta Allina comes in. Marta is the founder of Seoul Startups and a coach with ASAN SANGHOE, an entrepreneurship training program now in its second year that brings together North Korean resettlers with young people from South Korea and abroad to conceive of and plan business proposals. She also has a personal blog.

The organization is now recruiting people to go through their second startup boot camp. The deadline is April 3.

ASAN SANGHOE is a project run by the Asan Nanum Foundation, founded in 2011 to commemorate Hyundai founder Chung Ju-young, and its aims are the alleviation of social inequality and the promotion of entrepreneurship among youth. It is funded by the Hyundai Group.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un led a salvo missile launch to test the country’s “Nuclear Trigger’ system” for the first time this week. NK News Deputy Managing Editor Alannah Hill (@alannahmhill) sits down in the studio to discuss the test, as well as the release of a new song praising the country’s “friendly father” and allegations that DPRK animators may have had a hand in a popular Amazon Prime show.

Then, North Korea analyst Jacob Bogle joins the podcast to discuss his work on the AccessDPRK blog, which maps the DPRK using open-source satellite imagery. He explains how he aims to focus on areas that other analysts overlook and uncover trends that can reveal more about the lives of everyday North Koreans.

He also discusses how the volatility of North Korean media leads to difficulties in archiving cultural materials that can disappear at any time.

Based in Canada, Emil Boivin first became interested in North Korean media after screening DPRK films during his time at university. He collects DPRK books, DVDs and other media and was first tasked with filing and data storage for NKAAL (@NorthNKAAL) when it was created in 2020.
