Today, we step through the crumbling gates of a century-old state-run asylum thatopened its doors in 1904.

Built on over 400 acres across Preston and Norwich Connecticut, and included amassive complex of nearly 60 structures, it housed thousands, from criminally insane and tuberculosis cases to geriatric patients and those battling addiction.

For 92 years, it stood as both a place of healing and a site of controversial treatments, overcrowding, and whispered stories of suffering.

Closing in 1996, the last of its patients were either transferred to private facilities or simply released into the local communities, the State left the vast campus to decay into one of New England's most iconic abandoned sites, a haunting maze of broken windows, overgrown wards, and lingering echoes.

This is the story of Norwich State Hospital for the Insane.
