This week, Ira spoke with Marcia Naomi Berger, author of The Bipolar Therapist: A Journey From Madness to Love and Meaning. In this therapeutic episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Marcia talks about her first manic episode; why it took three hospitalizations before she realized she needed help; how after her hospitalizations, her colleagues interacted with her with, in some cases, a lack of acceptance; how her illness helped her become more compassionate towards her clients ; why he did not lose her confidence being able to help people; how having a sense of humor is crucial to get through life and helps her in her work; the importance of mentors; and writing the book so people who read it don’t feel alone with their mental illness.

San Francisco, Berger held senior-level positions in child welfare, alcoholism
treatment, and psychiatry.

Berger served as a lecturer on the clinical faculty at the University of California School of Medicine and as executive director of Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the East Bay. She lives with her husband, David Berger, in Marin County, California.
