Not All Princesses Have Hair, Creating Books for Children Going Through Chemo with Sarah Bankuti

Listen Later

Today's episode showcases a mom who is changing the narrative on children's books, inspired by her daughter.

Sarah Bankuti created “The Princess Lily Series” children's books for her daughter Alice, who is on chemotherapy, so she can grow up seeing herself represented in books. Chemotherapy treatments can change your appearance, from losing your hair to how well you can see. Children's books always show princesses a certain way, always including long hair and most certainly not with ports on their chests. This is what inspired her to create The Princess Lily Series. Her daughter and other children going through treatments can see themselves as princes and princesses and feel seen, represented and brave.

She has self-published the first 2 books in the series with 3 more coming out this year. She also donates many books to children’s hospitals and childhood cancer families worldwide. Here's her story.
