In 1983, sociologist Arlie Hochschild published The Managed Heart and gave us a concept we've never been able to un-see: emotional labor. The flight attendant trained to genuinely feel warm rather than perform warmth — because genuine feeling is more convincing and therefore more profitable. The self as factory. The emotion as product.
Her warning: when you deep act long enough, you don't lose the ability to feel. You lose the ability to locate feeling.
Reality television was the first proof of concept. Social media industrialized it. And the consequence isn't fakeness — it's something stranger. A generation that has lost reliable access to their own interiors. Feelings that arrive pre-formatted. Already shaped for sharing. Already aware of their own audience.
The recovery isn't a detox. It's a discipline. Creating conditions where performance is genuinely impossible.
Not every feeling needs a witness. Some feelings are only real because they don't have one.
