A Dog Called Diversity

Not gay enough, not straight enough….with Dominick Domingo

Listen Later

Dominick Domingo identifies as a Storyteller, an artist, a gay man and more recently as HIV positive. He graduated with distinction from Art Center College of Design in 1991 and spent 11 years as an artist with Disney Feature Animation in both LA and Paris, working on films including Lion King, Pocahontas and Hunchback of Notre Dame.  He also has illustrated books for major publishers including Penguin, Random House and Disney Publishing.

He speaks with Lisa about discovering his sexuality and coming out (such a good story), his creative work at Disney and beyond, and his denial about the chance of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and then acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

In his 50’s he fell incredibly sick and nearly died with AIDs. He tells the story of his “second coming out” and how the support of his family made all the difference.

 Dominick helps us understand:

  • Coming out stories are unique to each person, whether it’s coming out as gay or as having contracted HIV and AIDS
  • Gay stereotypes still exist and are strong, and
  • The experience of getting sick with HIV and the long road to recovery

Book that was referred to during the podcast is Now That You Know: A Parents' Guide to Understanding Their Gay and Lesbian Children
