Sermon Notes—“Not Worth Following”
“We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text

17These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. 18For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, 19promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”
2 Peter 2:17–22 (NASB95)

False teachers make great promises but are not worth following because:

The promise of living a blessed life that’s free from OBEDIENCE to God is a FANTASY.

Sin never liberates. It only enslaves.
34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
John 8:34 (ESV)

7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out!

Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
Genesis 4:7 (NLT)

17But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Romans 6:17–18 (NASB95)

Their spiritual condition is WORSE than a new convert (why would you follow someone who’s worse off than you??).

Reputation and rhetoric alone does not make someone worthy of being your SPIRITUAL GUIDE.

Follow others as they follow Christ. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV)

They have knowingly and willfully rejected the way, which will bring greater JUDGMENT than disobedience from ignorance.

If you know better, God expects you to do better.

47“And a servant who knows what the master wants, but isn’t prepared and doesn’t carry out those instructions, will be severely punished. 48But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.
Luke 12:47–48 (NLT)
