Notre Dame Clinches Double-Bye
Irish tie record for most ACC wins in a season with 14
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame’s Dane Goodwin scored seven of his game high 17 points before the first media timeout and the Irish never trailed in its 90-56 win over Georgia Tech at Purcell Pavilion on Saturday.
With the win, Notre Dame secures a top-four finish in the ACC and will receive a double-bye in the upcoming ACC Tournament that will be held in Brooklyn, NY from March 8-12.
“That’s huge. It’s been a goal of ours to get a top four finish,” said Goodwin. “We’ve got a great vibe and are looking forward to March.”
With the win Notre Dame (21-8, 14-4) tied a school record for most ACC wins in a season (14) and is a game behind league leading Duke.
“We won’t play until Thursday,” said coach Mike Brey. “I love that our scout team got in and they can play, too.”
Notre Dame with a short bench and using a seven-player rotation, was able to get 11 players into the action against the Yellow Jackets.
The Irish had a balanced scoring attack with Blake Wesley (15 points), Prentiss Hubb (13 points) and Paul Atkinson, Jr. (10 points) joining Goodwin in double-figure scoring.
Cormac Ryan, who got the start in place of Nate Laszewski, pulled down a career high 10 rebounds in the win for the Irish.
Notre Dame improves to 13-1 at Purcell Pavilion.
The Irish :18 seconds into the game scored its first points and never looked back leading 39:15 in the game.
Georgia Tech (11-18, 4-14) placed three players in double-figures and was led by Jordan Usher with 16 points.
Next up for the Fighting Irish will be the Florida State Seminoles as Notre Dame travels to Tallahassee on Wednesday for their final road game of the regular season. A place Notre Dame has never won a game. The tip is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
