In Lamentations 3 we find some familiar words, which prompted the lyrics of the old hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” I trust the original context of those words allows you to appreciate the amazing perspective that Jeremiah communicated in this passage. In our New Testament reading we continue with an emphasis on the intercessory work of Christ. In this God-breathed explanation I hope you can recognize the critical importance of the representation we have in Christ.

3 I am the man who has seen affliction
4 He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;
7 He has walled me about so that I cannot escape;
10 He is a bear lying in wait for me,
13 He drove into my kidneys
16 He has made my teeth grind on gravel,
19 Remember my affliction and my wanderings,
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; [2]
25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
28 Let him sit alone in silence
31 For the Lord will not
34 To crush underfoot
37 Who has spoken and it came to pass,
40 Let us test and examine our ways,
43 “You have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us,
46 “All our enemies
49 “My eyes will flow without ceasing,
52 “I have been hunted like a bird
55 “I called on your name, O Lord,
58 “You have taken up my cause, O Lord;
61 “You have heard their taunts, O Lord,
64 “You will repay them, [3] O Lord,
4 How the gold has grown dim,
2 The precious sons of Zion,
3 Even jackals offer the breast;
4 The tongue of the nursing infant sticks
5 Those who once feasted on delicacies
6 For the chastisement [8] of the daughter of my people has been greater
7 Her princes were purer than snow,
8 Now their face is blacker than soot;
9 Happier were the victims of the sword
10 The hands of compassionate women
11 The Lord gave full vent to his wrath;
12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
13 This was for the sins of her prophets
14 They wandered, blind, through the streets;
15 “Away! Unclean!” people cried at them.
16 The Lord himself [13] has scattered them;
17 Our eyes failed, ever watching
18 They dogged our steps
19 Our pursuers were swifter
20 The breath of our nostrils, the Lord‘s anointed,
21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
22 The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
5 Remember, O Lord, what has befallen us;
8 Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent [16] that the Lord set up, not man. 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”6 But as it is, Christ [17] has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
8 For he finds fault with them when he says: [18]
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. (ESV)
