In the early 90's Florida State and Notre Dame were two programs at the upper echelon of college football so when they squared off on November 13, 1993 it was a huge deal. So much so that it was dubbed the "Game of the Century."
This was a game we knew we had to do a complete episode on and we are glad we did.
Florida State was looking to capture its 1st national championship in program history and was led by head coach Bobby Bowden, Heisman trophy front runner Charlie Ward, and a host of recognizable names on both sides of the ball. On the other side Notre Dame led by Lou Holtz was coming off a national championship in 1988 and the traditional and pageantry of the program was at an all-time high.
While the game on the field met expectations the NBC broadcast was at its height as well with a Bob Costas open that will send shivers up your spine. We discuss it all in depth on this episode including:- The movie Rudy being released 1 month earlier
- OJ Simpson as one of the sideline reporters - Excellent interview w/ Bowden & Costas - The tradition of ND and how real it was at the time - Gameday's 1st on site show - Rosters for both sides - The Top 25 scores scroll and what it meant in 1993 - Two-way players - The ghost of Knute Rockne - Charlie Ward and the Fast Break Offense We hit all this and much more on the show. Plus we'll go through the entire game with thoughts on each quarter.
