“All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen and welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.”

—Hebrews 11:13

We all have times of tragedy, difficulty, and struggle in this life. It’s easy in those times to ask, “Why, God? I’m trying to be faithful and serve you.”

It’s not wrong to talk to God about our doubts and disappointments or even to ask him, “Why?” He’s big enough for our questions, and we see David, Job, and others ask him the same thing.

But this verse gives us the ultimate answer: this world isn’t our home.

When it seems like we’re not receiving the promises, we can know that we will receive them in that “better country”—the heavenly one where God is now preparing a place for us (Hebrews 11:16) beyond all imagination (1 Corinthians 2:9).

We might be strangers and exiles in this life, but Ephesians 2:19–22 reminds us that we are “no longer strangers and foreigners, but [we] are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom [we] also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.”

We don’t have to despair when this life is not meeting our expectations.

This isn’t our home, but we have one—a glorious, forever home that will realize and exceed all our expectations.
