NPD February 2018 Gaming Estimates and Analysis: Monster Sales Switch It Up

Listen Later

Things have returned to normal on this episode of the Popzara Podcast as it’s yet another look at the gaming industry’s biggest and most reliable source of sales estimates – the NPD Group! Specifically, it’s the NPD estimates for February 2018, which means Cory Galliher and Nathan Evans return to crunch numbers and chew bubblegum – but they’re all out of gum. Thank goodness for sexy numbers, so it’s not a total loss.
So how did the gaming industry’s biggest movers and shakers do in the month of love and Valentine’s?
In short – pretty great, for hardware sales anyway. Total sales of new game hardware and software was up a noticeable 23 percent over last year ($995 from $811 million). Most of this bump, of course, came from sales of new gaming consoles, which saw an impressive 55 percent increase over the same period last year ($316 million from $2014 million).
Sony’s PlayStation 4 led the charge, unseating Nintendo’s second-place Switch from the top spot while also snagging the year’s best-selling console crown (so far). Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles, including the beefier, more expensive Xbox One X, remain real mysteries as NPD continues to bury the platform’s sagging sales within revenue qualifiers like “Switch and Xbox One” to save face.
This is where you’ll want to pay close attention to your brutally honest hosts’ opinions and thoughts about why this is happening – and what Microsoft can do to help turn the tide. Having to manage multiple accounts like Xbox Live, Game Pass, Play Anywhere and more may not be the Hail Mary pass they think.
Sales of new gaming accessories also surged 35 percent upward over last year ($282 million over $210 million), with practically every accessory sector showing growth – except interactive toys. That means plenty of game controllers, headsets, and organizers flew off the shelves with Sony’s PS4’s DualShock 4 Wireless Controller the month – and year’s – overall best-seller.
Sales of new console and PC games were less enthusiastic, however, as combined revenue of $397 million matched last year’s sales tally to a tee. Capcom’s monstrous Monster Hunter: World once again led the charge – and remains 2018’s best-selling games thus far, and it’s worth mentioning Namco Bandai’s Dragon Ball FighterZ showed incredible resilience for an arcade fighter. NPD made pains to remind us that huge sales of Nintendo Switch software helped offset losses elsewhere, helping the Japanese giant lead all others in total software sales for the month.
