Podcast highlights:

08:05 Let's talk about what this podcast is going to be about. What do you want to do here with In the Making? -- People always talk about "startups" and it has this glamorous connotation. But starting up happens in many different contexts. I want to bring stores of other Asian makers and entrepreneurs to this show. We want to have conversations around starting up and give people a voice.
21:45 What qualities are you looking for in people you want to bring on the show? -- One thing is very close to my heart. It's about committing to the uncomfortable. We want to bring on people who recognize what they're doing has a purpose. They see themselves as enabling others. In the Making is not going to be about only the most famous people. It's the untold stories of people making a difference in small ways.
27:40 Isn't it the case so many of these people don't always recognize how what they're doing is amazing? -- Yes, very much so. I am on a mission to help people up their skills and up their game. That's what we're going to do here on In the Making.

01:43 Tell us about your journey. What brought you to Shanghai? -- I wanted to do something new and escape my comfort zone. I had a "reality check" within the first few months when it was obvious the language barrier and other impediments meant this wasn't going to be smooth sailing.
04:10 Going through the process of moving to China, what was that like while you were doing it? -- I used to cry every single day for three weeks. Simple things like finding vegetarian food was a nightmare. I spoke zero Chinese. It was truly starting from scratch...but that was the opportunity!
06:10 Now you know everybody and everybody knows you. How did this happen? -- I was fortunate to have three colleagues from Ogilvy who also made the move to Shanghai. So at least I knew a few people. I used to go to internet cafes and the public library. This was 2005. Today you don't see internet cafes in Shanghai.

11:19 Let's talk about failure. Failure is an important part of all this, isn't it? -- Yes. People are inspired by success and bombarded with stories of success; but come on, who hasn't failed? We don't talk about this. Maybe 1% of discussions center on failures even though people learn so much more from failures.
13:42 Going back to the earlier question, the whole purpose of In the Making is to explore, uncover, and bring to light "in the making" backstories. The people we will interview, their job is not done. It is a work in progress. They are still in the making.
15:03 Do people in large corporate environments get this idea of still being in the making? Or do they just see a bunch of check-boxes with items accomplished and they're on to the next one? -- Things are changing fast. Especially in China, the speed is unprecedented. Corporate-types are quite nimble. There are many many different approaches to being in the making.
17:47 What is it like when you bring people together from across a value chain? Many times these people have never worked together. -- On the inside, people often may not know each other but they are working in broadly similar ways. The challenge is when you bring in external actors. The key is to make your partners think the ideas are their own.
