New South Wales Police is establishing a permanent Armed Response Command with 250 heavily armed officers patrolling major events and community gatherings across Sydney. The new command, an expansion of Operation Shelter, includes officers with high-powered rifles, doubled multicultural liaisons, and an operations centre to monitor threats following the Bondi terror attack and rising hate crimes. The squad will take 18 months to become fully operational, with costs to taxpayers yet to be revealed.
