I got told one rule on labor & delivery and thought it was a joke — Don't wear red!!! Then I watched the unit prove it to me. 👀 Red underwear? Red shoes? Red scrub cap? On L&D, everybody swears it brings on a hemorrhage. I didn’t believe it either — until one shift turned into a full-on emergency marathon.
And the dads? Let’s just say some of them learned the hard way that love and delivery can make you dizzy really fast.
Labor & delivery will humble you, heal you, and surprise you all in the same day. I hope you enjoy the episode!

Twenty-five years later, the grief, the heroism, and the “never forget” that still lives in a nurse’s memory.
Today I share the 9/11 story I have carried for decades—what I saw, what I felt, and why I still keep a bin full of newspapers, photos, VHS tapes, and printed-out memories from that day. Working the night shift as an emergency department nurse, I watched the attacks unfold with a paramedic roommate, felt the helpless pull to go help in New York, and later realized just how deeply the constant news coverage was affecting me. This is a raw, personal reflection on the moment the world changed, and the way it reshaped my understanding of nursing, EMS, and human resilience.
I also reflect on the responders and volunteers who ran toward danger, the communities that came together in the aftermath, and the emotional toll of witnessing so much loss from afar. I tie it all back to a simple truth: an ordinary day is never guaranteed, and the people who show up in the worst moments deserve to be remembered. Essential listening if you lived through 9/11, work in healthcare or EMS, or want a deeply human reminder of why we honor the people we lost and the people who kept going.
The best nurses and first responders know this - staying calm in chaos can save lives, and knowing your own wishes can spare your family from impossible decisions. This episode, I turn a Labor Day catch-up into a powerful, practical conversation about trauma, end-of-life planning, organ donation, and why the paperwork you fill out today matters more than you think.
Nursing will change the way you see people and your own life - and I prove it in this raw, funny, and deeply personal first episode. I share the real story behind my path into healthcare, from the moment that made me choose nursing to the 30-plus years of lessons, losses, humor, and heart that shaped my career. I talk about the path that took me from hospital admitting to ER, flight nursing, high-risk labor and delivery, and now critical care ground transport. Along the way, I explain what it takes to grow in a profession that demands everything from you, and why strong mentors, honest peer support, and refusing to "eat our young" matter so much for the next generation of nurses. You'll hear stories, insights, and memorable moments that define life after the shift - from dark humor and patient encounters to the emotional weight of transporting someone who may never get another chance to talk, and the small rituals that keep healthcare workers grounded. I break down some of the biggest life lessons nursing has taught me: how fast everything can change, why every person has a story, and why compassion matters. If you've ever worked in healthcare, love nursing stories, or just want a real voice talking about work, life, and everything in between, this episode delivers exactly that. This kickoff episode sets the tone for a podcast built to make you laugh, think, and leave feeling a little lighter than when you pressed play.
