We Wonder

O Wisdom: Monday, Isaiah 29:13-16

Listen Later

O Wisdom, you come forth from the mouth of the Most High.

You fill the universe and hold all things together in a strong yet gentle manner.

O come to teach us the way of truth.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 29:13-16

Isaiah says, “How silly they are to think that potters are like the clay they work with!” I wonder: are these words of judgment for me? Do I sometimes act more like a potter than like clay? Do I sometimes think I know what is best for myself, or for the people around me, without stopping to ask God?

God said to Isaiah, “I will destroy the wisdom of those who think they are so wise. I will do away with the cleverness of those who think they are so smart.” I wonder if there are things or people I admire who are out of line with God’s wisdom? Can I ask God to help me see myself and the world with his eyes?

If God is like a potter, and we are like clay, I wonder: what has God made me for? How has he shaped me specially, for a good and wise purpose?

Advent is a time for remembering that we, and our world, need God to come and save. Is there anything in me, or in the world around me, that I want to call out for Jesus to come and make new?
