Last week, 35 Russian diplomats based in the United States were expelled by President Barack Obama while two diplomatic compounds were shut down, in response to the alleged hacking of the Democratic Party and Hilary Clinton’s campaign during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. These measures represent arguably the strongest-ever official response against state-sponsored hacking, going significantly farther than similar incidents in the past involving countries like China and North Korea.
