You can be Jewish by observing the anniversary of a loved ones death. Since this is done once a year it is call a Yahrzeit. Use the English date if that makes the most sense to you. You observe by lighting a candle that burns for 24 hours. 

There are Yahrzeit candles available at major supermarkets and on line, however the candle is a reminder and a symbol, this means that the choice of candle is not important, lighting it is to help us remember.
