OFI 462: European Agricultural Tour!

SHOW NOTES
KEY IDEAS:
Well, the episode I have been so excited to produce has finally come to fruition.  I love Idaho and I love our farm.  But for so many years when I was listening to people talk about how to make money through podcasting as well as passive income I heard people talk so much about working remotely from Europe.  So, for one episode, I am doing just that.

We have been in either Germany, France or Austria for almost 2 weeks now.  I have been paying close attention to all the agriculture that I have been seeing.  I recorded the podcast earlier today, so here is a tidbit that is on the post but was not on the show - when we had dinner in Golling, Austria tonight oxen was on the menu.  I found that very interesting.

Here are some notes that I have made as we have toured around Europe:

Farming right up to cities edge - we stayed in Unterhaching, Germany and the corn fields came right up to the park. No sprawl. There must be a moratorium on building.
Statues dedicated to midevil cattle auction in Munich.
Farmers market open everyday except Sunday

butcher shops
Fruit
Bread
Vegetables
Cheese
All surrounding beer garten

More livestock as we moved west towards French border.
Farms had small plots of each crop, perhaps 5 acres of wheat next to 5 acres of corn next to 5 acres of pasture
No irrigation visible anywhere due to the wet climate
Sheep were browsing in orchards to eat grasses, weeks, etc.
Small villages surrounded by farm ground rather than one farm house on a large acreage

It appears that the farmers live in the villages

Community garden areas with sheds and out buildings - well kept up on cities edge and along railroad tracks
Predominant beef cow in France appears to be Charlois. Saw only charlois, Holstein and guernsey cattle.
Lots of sheep in France as well.
Lots of wheat in every country, all being sprayed the exact same way, probably for a fungicide.
Rolling pasture lands - lots of grass for grazing
The hops I saw were not as tall as what I see grown in the U.S., possibly only 10 feet tall.
