Ohios food assistance benefit cards lack a crucial security feature, making them susceptible to skimming attacks. Between June 2021 and December 2022, nearly $17 million was stolen from over 34,000 households. The federal government no longer reimburses these losses, leaving families without means to feed themselves. Despite support, a bill to add chips to these cards has not passed in Ohio. Other states have implemented chip technology, but a nationwide solution is yet to be implemented. Cardholders are advised to check for skimmers, protect their PIN, and use available features to prevent fraud.
