My how times have changed…
Once upon a time, December 11, 1981, to be exact, it was made very clear to myself and a hundred or so of my closest roommates, that when the Chaplin says, “Let us pray,” our heads better snap down and stay bowed until he says “Amen.” It was also made VERY clear that our own personal beliefs did not matter a whit. also, if we decided to “exercise” our 1st amendment rights and not participate in the mandatory prayer, we would find ourselves repeating the last few weeks until we understood that “Bow your head,” means bow your head, not a personal endorsement of a given theological belief.
In the big scheme of things, it was a small moment in a very big day. But of all the things that happened that day, that is the one that I remember.
Jump ahead almost forty years and we learn that at the Naval Academy, a group of sailors have decided that they feel compelled to worship Old Scratch hisself. To that end, they demanded(?) and got the Navy to give them a room to hold their selected religious practices.
