A 60-foot-tall sign of Speedee the Chef atop one of the famed golden arches marks the site of the oldest existing McDonald's. Little has changed since the third restaurant franchised by Richard & Maurice McDonald opened on Aug. 18, 1953; employees dress in 1050s-style paper hats, white shirts and bolo ties, and there remains no indoor seating for this walk-up fast-food stand. Named a lnadmark by the Downey Historical Society in 1980, this McDonald's serves up a powerful side order of nostalgia to go with the simplified menu of burgers, fires & milkshakes.
