OMD | Britain's Greatest Synth Pop Band?

Listen Later

What happens when electronic music chooses restraint over excess, when it speaks softly, but still leaves a mark?

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, often shortened to OMD, formed in Merseyside in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. Their sound sits in that space between pop clarity and experimental intent. Synthesizers, drum machines, fragments of melody, but arranged with a kind of careful distance.

OMD’s influence sits quietly but widely across electronic and pop music. Not through spectacle, but through reduction showing how little is needed for something to endure.
Described as one of the most influential synth-pop acts in history, OMD have inspired many artists across diverse genres and disciplines.

In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.
