During this week of prayer for Christian unity, we must reject the complacency and triumphalism that often lead us to ignore the tragedy of a divided body of Christ. While we hold the fullness of the faith, we are called to follow Christ’s example by prioritizing charity and building bridges of understanding with others rather than simply "slamming the door". In a modern culture that prioritizes constant activity, we must reclaim the truth that the "Sabbath was made for man," viewing it as a life-giving gift rather than a restrictive rule. While advertisers use images of rest and simplicity to sell us more products, true peace comes not from buying things, but from the radical act of stopping. By taking time to disconnect from work and digital distractions to simply "be" with God and others, we honor the divine command to slow down and find the spiritual nourishment we desperately need.

On a day dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we must reject the temptation to judge others by outward characteristics like race or ethnicity, and remember what St John Paul II taught us, that our true value lies in the Father’s love for us. True social transformation begins with the internal work of eliminating the judgment and discrimination hidden within our own hearts. By choosing to love every individual as a unique person rather than a category, we enact the only change that can truly heal the world.

As we enter the first week of Ordinary Time, it is easy to feel that we are living through a period of endings, but in the life of the Church, every ending is a new beginning. We are moving out of a thousand-year era of "Christendom" where the faith was mainstream and into a new age where being a Christian is no longer socially "cool" or culturally expected. This shift is an opportunity to reclaim the radical spirit of the early Church, treating our baptism not as a passive identity but as a wholehearted commitment to discipleship that offers the world the light it desperately needs.

While Christ performed physical miracles, he did so primarily as signs of the spiritual healing he truly came to bring—the removal of sin. We must resist the temptation to "use" God to solve our worldly problems or avoid suffering, as faith is meant to be a deep relationship of mutual self-giving rather than a transaction. By uniting our own pain and suffering to God, we allow Him to transform those experiences internally into something beautiful and good in union with Him.

While God alone enacts judgment on corruption, we are called to a positive energy that builds something new rather than fixating on tearing down the old. Following the "law of Gamaliel," we can trust that evil eventually destroys itself, freeing us to focus on personal conversion and creating a culture of life. By fostering a spirit that is irresistibly good, we overcome obstacles through the compelling power of our presence rather than through direct opposition.
