In a world that feels increasingly chaotic, the early Christians faced a similarly violent society by treating baptism as a radical, life-risking conversion. While we often view the sacrament as a forgettable childhood rite, it was originally a transformation that changed the world through sheer radiant joy. We are called today to activate that same baptismal grace, choosing to hand our lives over to Christ so completely that we become a light in the darkness.

While the Latin root for repentance suggests sorrow or pain, the Greek concept of metanoia means a fundamental turn—not just of direction, but of focus. Sin is a state of being turned inward and trapped in our own minds, whereas salvation is Christ’s invitation to turn out of ourselves and toward others. True humility in this new year is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less, forgetting your own ego to finally engage with the real world and the people around you.

In the season of Epiphany, we are reminded that we are not the source of light, but rather windows meant to let God's glory shine through. Our spiritual work, therefore, is not to generate grace but to "clean the glass" by scrubbing away the bad habits and worldly attachments that obscure His presence. This New Year, strive for the clarity of heart that allows the true Light of Christ to illuminate the darkness for everyone you meet.

While we might prefer a "nice" religion of comfort, the true Gospel is a radical message that threatened the status quo enough to make Jesus' own neighbors want to kill him. A "beige" or lukewarm faith inspires no one; rather, we are called to set the world on fire with a conviction that demands total sacrifice. If your faith isn't causing some friction or opposition in your life, you might be "doing it wrong," for authentic love is always a challenge to the world.

Like Mother Teresa, who vowed never to say "no" to God, we are called to overcome the false prudence and excuses that keep us from acting on God's immediate promptings. Christ’s walk on water reveals that the impossible becomes possible not through showmanship, but when we "take ourselves lightly" and focus entirely on obeying the Father to serve others. This message challenges you to stop calculating the cost and simply go where God calls, reverencing Christ in the needs of those right in front of you.

The "problem of pain" forces us to ask why a loving God permits suffering rather than simply waving a magic wand to fix our broken world. God's answer is not to erase the struggle, but to enter it with us on the Cross, empowering us to "give them something to eat" by actively participating in the work of redemption.
