Three years ago, I started working with Alma Griffith, a psychotherapist and coach, and it completely changed my life. Outwardly I was ‘successful’, I had a good job and a nice life but within me something felt off — I wasn’t feeling fulfilled or content with my life. In this episode of On Becoming the Change, I speak to Katherine Ellsworth-Krebs, a Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Strathclyde focusing on sustainable design and a coach for sustainability professionals. For the past year, Katherine and I have collaborated on a research project to explore the realities of working in a sustainability role within an organisation. We surveyed 92, and interviewed 28, sustainability professionals to find out what the main challenges were and what skills and support they needed. In this conversation, we share insights from our research, stories we heard from sustainability professionals, our personal experiences with eco-anxiety and the journey’s that led us to become coaches dedicated to supporting changemakers. The stories we heard about sustainability professionals experience of imposter syndrome and eco-anxiety.

The unique struggles of the sustainability field, including loneliness, the newness of the industry, and the absence of clear career paths and guidance.

In this episode, I share my vision for a better world—a vision that is focused on each of us as individuals and how we show up. I believe the way we can create a thriving future begins with us as individuals, and the way we think, what we believe, how we see the world, what we value and how we interact with ourselves, others and nature. Working on ourselves is, not only, the only thing we are really in control of, it’s also the deepest leverage point for change and create a ripple effect to move us into a new paradigm and way of being as humanity where we live in a way that serves all life. This episode comes in three parts:

* The first looks at how what we believe, value and how we view the world creates the outcomes we see and why the deepest leverage point for transforming the world is in how we think.The challenges we face globally—climate change, inequality, war, mental health crisis, biodiversity loss—are the consequences of systems that have been created by people and the way they act. How people act is driven by societal and cultural norms and their values, beliefs and worldviews - this is our inner world. This ‘inner world’ has created the systems we live in and therefore the outcomes and consequences we are seeing in the world. By bringing our awareness to the mindsets causing these global issues, and choosing to act differently - we can address the root causes and work at the deepest leverage point for real, meaningful change.

* Next I explore why we need to start with ourselves and why change happens from the inside out and how we can do thatHaving spent a lot of time working in social and environmental jobs, I’ve come to the realisation that the real change starts from within. The only thing we can control in our life is ourselves, and how we interact with ourselves, others and what’s happening in the wider world. By working on how we relate to ourselves, others and circumstances, and becoming more aware, aligned, and authentic, we can contribute in a deeply meaningful way to change. I explore a number of different ways in which we can do the work on ourselves to become the change we want to see - from understanding what’s important to us, having self-compassion, being authentic, being mindful, having a spiritual outlook, unlearning collective beliefs, learning emotional resilience, coaching and systems thinking and seeing ourselves as interconnected with all.

* Lastly, I share my vision for a world where we and nature thrive, that is all centred around what we can each do as an individual and how that could create meaningful systemic change I share what I think this would look like in practice - how people would be interacting with themselves, with others and with the natural world. I explore how we could be if we showed up in our authenticity, rooted in love, presence and connection. I imagine a world where people interact in non-judgemental, empathic and loving way, where people contribute to systems that regenerate themselves, and share how we could all be part of creating this upward spiral of energy to create a beautiful future beyond what we could even imagine.

Throughout this episode, I share how to go on this journey in a manageable way, meeting yourself where you are and taking small, meaningful steps towards the change you want to make. We are all on our own unique journey and we all have something different and unique to offer the world, it’s about finding out whats yours to do and finding inner peace whilst you do that! I share that I’m on this journey too and I’m showing up in a messy, imperfect and authentic way because I think that’s what’s really needed in the world. If we can show up as our true selves, if we can work on our relationships to ourselves, others and nature, we can create a thriving future.

“In your mind, run a movie of how your work, at its best, is adding value to a world that's calling for harmony between our needs and its flourishing.

Or, ask three people who you value in your community about 3 qualities they, and you, value about where you live. Then think how each of you could take one of "those qualities to its next level.”

Paul Pivcevic is an experienced consultant, coach and systemic constellator with more than 20 years of work in organisational development and change across Europe and the US. Clients have included utilities, industrial engineering, biotech, banking, charities, and retail. His interest in complex systems drew him to Regenesis in the US with whom he trained in regenerative practice in 2018. He now draws on the long legacy of regenerative philosophy and its practical application, combining this with his understanding of organisational dynamics and change leadership, to work with clients to draw on their deep potential to create value offerings that contribute to both social and ecological renewal.

Paul lives with his wife in an empty nest in the city of Bath in the west of England. He’s particularly interested in how  a regenerative approach can be a resource to designing a new kind of economy that re-frames wealth, justice and well-being.

In this episode, I speak with Benjamin Casteillo, from New World Together. We dive into the interconnected crises facing humanity, from water shortages in Bali, where Benjamin lives, to the global challenges of climate change, economic instability, and collective mental health. We explore how these crises, often treated as separate issues, stem from deeper systemic patterns, outdated belief systems, limiting fears, and unresolved human traumas. In other words, the behaviors that contribute to the world's problems aren’t part of unchangeable human nature but arise from unconscious, psychological patterns rooted in survival instincts and ancestral belief systems—fear and trauma we’ve inherited. To address the external challenges we face, we must first confront and resolve the internal ones.

We explore how emotions, often dismissed or suppressed, can serve as a powerful tool for transformation. By facing the challenges of our times with curiosity, courage, and self-awareness, we have an opportunity to heal individually and collectively. By learning to welcome our emotions, we can accept the reality we are faced with and create the change and the future we want to see. We explore:

* How interconnected crises stem from systemic human behavior and unconscious patterns, which forms the metacrisis.

* How emotions are a gateway to awareness and action, and processing them allows us to remain present in the face of difficult realities.

* The deeply held beliefs, like endless growth and accumulation, which fuel destructive systems and require urgent re-evaluation.

* How humanity’s collective and intergenerational trauma perpetuates harmful cycles, and healing is key to moving forward.

* How the meta-crisis offers a meta-opportunity for our evolution and transformation.

* How conscious change begins with small actions like curiosity, forgiveness, empathy, and redefining success around the idea of “enough.”

At this moment in history we are being called to evolve individually and collectively, and this episode is an invitation to heal ourselves, inspire systemic change, and create a more conscious future for humanity.

Benjamin Casteillo was born in France in 1979 and often questioned the world around him and sought to understand the deeper meaning in life. After studying engineering and international business, his career took him across the globe, from Canada to Asia, where he climbed the corporate ladder for over a decade. Despite outward success, he felt increasingly disconnected, troubled by the corporate world's focus on profit over purpose and its disregard for social and environmental issues. A deeper feeling that he was feeding a system that is destroying the surface of the planet and driving humanity toward disaster called him to seek for answers and meaning.

In 2017, a transformative meditative retreat in Bali led to a profound shift in consciousness. Leaving behind his corporate career, he dedicated himself to exploring deeper truths about humanity and our collective future. Since 2018, he has focused his energy and insights on serving a greater purpose: contributing to a more conscious, sustainable, and meaningful existence on Earth.

“A problem well-stated is a problem half solved”.

In this episode, we’ll explore the problems the world is facing - from looking at how our economic system is having consequences on all natural systems and exceeding the earth’s biocapacity and planetary boundaries - to exploring the current and predicted state of social, environmental and technological issues like climate change, water scarcity, AI, mental health, biodiversity loss and economic inequality. We then look at what might be underneath all of these challenges and the mental models, beliefs and ways of thinking that might be contributing to the issues we are seeing in the world. I explore the interconnectedness of these issues and how old beliefs and fears, as well as our separation and disconnection from our self, others and the natural world may be driving humanity towards it’s own destruction.

In the first half of the episode, I talk about the role of emotional intelligence and share the approaches that have helped me to find more peace and acceptance with absorbing this type of information about the state of the world. From approaching the world’s problems with acceptance, to holding the stories of the future lightly, to connecting with and welcoming emotions and bringing ourselves back into the present moment. I share an invitation in the episode before I share stats and figures for you to check in with yourself and how resourced you feel to listen to that part and honour what feels right for you.

I’ll also dive into the emotional landscape of these challenges, sharing what feelings this type of information brings up for me and share ways in which you can manage feelings that arise for you and and offer you some space to process your feelings.

In this episode, I chat with Marta Abramska, who is an executive coach and led the Animas Transformative Coach training I took earlier this year. We deep dive into the Drama Triangle which explores the different roles we may take up when we are in a dysfunctional interaction - whether that’s with ourselves, with other people or with the wider system.

We explore the different roles like Rescuer, Victim, and Persecutor, and share examples of how these roles play out, why it can be hard to step away from them, and what’s possible when we do. We explore a particular example in depth of the experience of someone trying to live sustainably and how we can move between these different roles from the rescuer - trying to save the world, the victim - feeling resentful or like ‘what’s the point?’ and the persecutor - blaming or being angry at other people and their actions. We talk about what impact it has to be in these roles and we discuss ways to bring self-compassionate awareness when these dynamics are playing out in order to shift from reactive roles toward more empowering roles. So that we can learn to take a pause and step into the Coach, the Creator and the Challenger roles that enable more healthy and dynamic relationships.
