On Eagles‘ Wings - from the Lessons from the Exodus series

Listen Later

It has been three months since the Israelites left Egypt and the people find themselves camped in front of Mount Sinai.

Exodus 19:3-6. Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

If you have been reading through the book of Exodus with us you know that although it has been only three months from the time of the exit from Egypt that the Israelites had found plenty to complain about. It reminds me of a lot of us. No matter what God has done for us we feel the need and right to complain. Complaints against God are ubiquitous among God’s people.

Yet look at what God had done. He had saved the people from the pursuing Egyptians, had parted the Red Sea, had given them manna to eat and water to drink, had destroyed the Amalekites when they came against them. At no point along the way had God abandoned the people. In fact, God says to Moses. “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.”

I want you to think about your own life for a moment. You too have been brought on eagles’ wings to where you are. But here is the interesting thing. He has brought them on eagles’ wings not to safety, not to a better place although both are true, but He has brought them on eagles’ wings to Himself. That is what God says. God’s gracious provision for us is meant to bring us closer to Him. To literally bring us to Him. To teach us that we were meant for Him and we were created for Him.

Who are we to God? He calls the Israelites His treasured possession. Treasured possession is the Hebrew word, “Segula.” The word means “my treasured possession. My treasure.” That is what God calls us who follow Him. His treasured possession. His treasure. Think about that for a moment. You are His treasure. You also belong to Him if you have made Him your savior. That is why he carries us on eagles’ wings. We are precious to Him and He loves us with an infinite love. We are not a distraction or people that he puts up with. We are His treasured possession. Those that He loves and protects. We are His Segula.

But we are a treasured possession, His Segula with a purpose. God says to Moses, “Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” You are special to me. You are my people even though the whole earth is mind. But you will also be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. You will be my representatives to the world around you, to those who don’t know God. You are my ambassadors and representatives.” You are a Segula, a treasure with a purpose.

Never underestimate God’s love for you as He carries you today on eagles wings, or His call on your life to be His representative to others around you. You are a loved, holy individual with a holy calling.

Father, thank you that you carry me on eagles’ wings all the days of my life. And thank you that I am your treasure but your treasure with a purpose. Help me fulfill your purpose. Amen.
