Divine, Intriguing, Lively
This is a deeply personal, yet profoundly far-reaching, memoir. Humor is graciously mixed throughout the pages to help lighten the weight of gravity, which is to be expected when talking about ascending into the clouds. MacIvor-Andersen blends stories about being brought up in a devoutly evangelical Christian household with his adult foray into a new faith: one grown from the soil. Trees feature as a primary mode of sustaining life and binding family while at the same time being humbled, brought down, and ultimately rearranged by the force that is a confused humanity.
I truly appreciated the way he left the reader to make their own decisions about what is right or wrong in regards to religion. May the facts and stories about God and trees on earth lead us all to better understand our own circumstances and help us to figure out the legacy we ultimately hope to leave behind.
Tightly packed, pleasantly unwound.
I want to write four different reviews, each with five stars.
A meditation on growing up in evangelical Christianity, and letting go. Five stars.
A meditation on love and loss. Five stars.
A love note to Nashville. Five stars.
A story about brothers - in life and death. Five stars.
Oh, and it's about skydiving and treeclimbing?! Yes.
love, and most of all the beauty
This book is interesting as a piece of literature as well as a story. It feels similar to the masterpiece The Things They Carried in its reoccurring approach to themes. The author uses the story of his life and his family members' lives to explore the human experience of innocence, faith, pain, duty, and most of all, that desire many of us feel to know what it is to be the most alive. The characters in the story seek danger, purpose, love, and most of all the beauty, magnificence, and fear of nature. Swinging through the trees is their real life and their metaphorical access to all that is alive and worth living for. It was hard to put down because every page somehow put words to the hunger I also feel for the forest, the jungle, and the mountains but cannot describe very well.
Five Stars
A great book exploring life in the trees, family dynamics and relationships with the world.
